Wrought Iron

For hundreds of years, iron has been the material of choice for gates and fences throughout the world: the strength of the material offers security, and the handcrafted nature of wrought iron means you can customize your gate to make it truly one-of-a-kind.

At Garon Fence, we hot dip galvanize our wrought iron gates, which adds a zinc coating to the metal, protecting it from oxidation. We then prime and paint over it for finishing to provide thorough protection from the elements. With proper care (including re-painting every few years), these gates can last for generations.

Stainless Steel

Here at Garon, we polish all our stainless steel by hand to give it a reflective luster that catches the eye. Aluminum

Also naturally resistant to rust, custom-made aluminum fence gates are lower maintenance than wrought iron, but they’re also more expensive, which is why aluminum is usually used for simpler fence and gate designs.

Bronze

While less common for fence gates than for balconies, railings, or balustrades, bronze is also an option. It presents a very antique appearance: the metal naturally develops a dark patina with time, something that can be developed in advance before installation for customers who request it.

Standard Sizes for Metal Fence Gates

The size of a fence gate can vary depending on its purpose. A single-panel gate designed for people to walk through will usually be about 3 to 4 feet wide. Smaller gates, such as this one from the gallery below, can also work as side entrances next to a larger driveway gate.

We typically recommend at least one 8-foot wide double gate for all properties with a fence so that landscapers can get through with equipment such as wheelbarrows, riding lawn mowers, or tractors. Wider gates may also be aesthetically appropriate for taller privacy fences or deer fences.

Are Metal Fence Gates More Secure than Wood Fence Gates?

While metal gates generally offer better security due to their strength and durability, a well-built and maintained wooden fence gate with additional security features can be just as effective. Wood fence gates also excel when privacy is a priority, since they’re often made from solid panels or from wider and more closely spaced pickets. Yes, it’s possible to mix materials in order to place a metal gate on a wooden fence. (Many of the examples in our gallery below mix metal gates with stone walls and fences.)
