Get the Perfect Fit with Custom Wooden Walkway Gates

Custom wood fence gates (or walk gates, as they’re sometimes called) are a perfect addition to any home or property. Available in a range of wood types, colors, and designs, they can match the existing architecture and style of your property, or stand out as unique features unto themselves.

What’s the Best Wood for Fence Gates?

The best woods for a fence gate should be strong, sturdy, and naturally resistant to corrosion from insects and the elements. At Garon Fence, we work in western red cedar, mahogany, and Brazilian ipe.

Mahogany

Mahogany is an exceptionally strong wood, and it features a distinctive deep rich reddish brown color. Its fine-grained and smooth texture allow for a high-quality finish, and its warm, natural aesthetic is a perfect complement for many homes. It’s also naturally rot- and pest-resistant, making it a great choice for fence and walk gates.

Western Red Cedar

Cedar is also an excellent choice for a fence gate: prized for its rich color, ranging from mellow ambers to reddish cinnamons, western red cedar is light, durable, and contains an oil that makes it resistant to insect damage and decay. It’s also more resistant to warping than many other woods, so it’s good in damp or humid climates.

Brazilian Ipe

Also known as “Ironwood,” Brazilian ipe is one of the most durable and sought after hardwoods for outdoor construction. It’s low maintenance, naturally resistant to decay, and even has a Class A fire rating, the same rating given to concrete and steel.

How Long Do Wood Fence Gates Last?

With proper care and maintenance, including regular staining, sealing, cleaning, and prompt repairs to day-to-day wear and tear, a well built wood fence gate made from high quality lumber can last up to 20 years or more.

If you’re looking for a gate that looks like painted wood but with fewer maintenance requirements, you might want to consider composite gates. Made from a unique blend of high quality polymers and recycled plastics, composite gates resist decay and can last even longer than wood.

How Big Should a Wood Fence Gate Be?

The size of a fence gate can vary depending on its purpose. A single-panel gate designed for people to walk through will usually be about 3 to 4 feet wide. These gates can also work as side entrances next to a larger driveway gate.

We typically recommend at least one 8-foot wide double gate for all properties with a fence so that landscapers can get through with equipment such as wheelbarrows, riding lawn mowers, or tractors. Wider gates may also be aesthetically appropriate for taller privacy fences or deer fences.
