Metal Arbors and Trellises

A wrought iron arbor is set into a simple wrought iron fence. The arch of the arbor frames a double gate. The vertical posts have an inverted half-circle between them at the top of the fence.

Structures like arbors and trellises are a beautiful way to add a touch of magic to your yard. They can add definition to your existing space, or become a unique focal point. No matter your style, Garon’s custom process and high-quality materials make your home and garden more uniquely your own.

Metal Arbor Materials

Wrought Iron

Wrought iron is an ideal material for arbors and trellises because of its strength and durability. In a process that has developed over centuries, wrought iron is repeatedly heated and shaped by our craftsmen until it reaches its desired final form. This means it’s completely customizable, whether you prefer a sleek and minimalist modern look or a more traditional feel.

Additionally, wrought iron is very strong, and with proper care can last for decades. Our wrought iron arbors are hot dip galvanized, which adds a zinc coating to the metal that prevents oxidation. We then prime and paint over it for finishing to provide long term protection from the elements.

Aluminum

We also design arbors and trellises from aluminum, which can be either primed and painted like wrought iron or powder coated for a long-lasting natural finish. Typically black or bronze tone in color, aluminum is lightweight, durable, and low maintenance.

Stainless Steel

While less common for arbors and trellises, stainless steel can be made to match any surrounding fencing, or it can be customized for a unique, modern look. We hand-polish our stainless steel structures to a mirror finish that catches the light and makes your property stand out.

Styles of Metal Arbors

Because the metals we use are so versatile, there are many different styles to choose from. Below are some popular styles; take advantage of Garon’s free on-site consultation to determine which one is right for you.

Classic and Ornate

Classic metal arbors feature intricate scrollwork and decorative details, giving them a romantic and elegant look. Because it’s a classic, this style complements multiple different aesthetics.

Modern and Minimalist

If your preferred look is more modern, consider geometric or industrial styles. Geometric arbors have clean lines and simple shapes, perfect for minimalist or Asian-inspired gardens. Industrial arbors often feature exposed metal or raw finishes.

Rustic and Natural

Metals designs can be completely original, or they can replicate antique arbors for a nostalgic feel. Wrought iron’s flexibility as a material also means it can be shaped into leaves, branches, and even flowers for a nature-inspired design, blending man-made elements seamlessly into your natural space.

FAQs about Metal Arbors

Where’s the Best Place to Put an Arbor?

Arbors are often placed along the fence line over a walk gate in order to better frame the entryway and guide guests through the property. They can also be placed anywhere throughout your garden depending on your own personal style. For instance:

  • An arbor at the entrance of your garden works almost like a doorway, opening out onto the space and establishing a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Placing an arbor in the center of your garden works as a focal point to draw attention.
  • Position your arbor over a walkway to add a touch of shade and elegance to your garden path.
  • Placing an arbor near a seating area provides shade and a cozy atmosphere for outdoor gatherings. Consider mixing materials; for example, a metal arbor leading to a stone patio creates visual interest.
  • Create a secluded retreat for relaxation by placing an arbor in a less frequented part of your yard.

No matter where you put your arbor, you’ll want to consider the following factors:

  • Sunlight: If you want to grow climbing plants, ensure the arbor receives ample direct light during the day.
  • Privacy: Place it in a spot that offers privacy if desired.
  • Space: Ensure the arbor fits comfortably in the chosen location.
  • View: Position it with an eye toward the perspective it will grant to guests who stop and stand there.

What’s the Difference Between an Arch and an Arbor?

The main difference is the shape: arches are curved, while arbors can be curved or flat. Typically, an arch is a curved structure that people can walk under, and is almost always decorative. An arbor, on the other hand, is a freestanding structure with a roof or canopy, often designed to support climbing plants. It’s frequently used in gardens as a focal point or to provide shade.

What’s the Difference Between an Arbor and a Pergola?

Arbors and pergolas are distinguished by their roofs, their size, and the purposes they serve in your outdoor space. A pergola often has a flat, slatted, and/or open roof, creating a partially-shaded area that is used for outdoor living or entertaining spaces. Arbors are smaller, with an arched roof that can be open or solid, depending on the style. Pergolas are almost always large and used to shade an outdoor living area, while arbors are smaller and can serve a variety of purposes, including providing shade, creating a focal point, or supporting climbing plants.

How Are Metal Arbors Secured in the Ground?

The specific method used will depend on the size, weight, and style of your arbor, as well as factors like the soil condition of your property. However, at Garon, we typically use heavy duty posts for our arbors that are placed into large concrete footings set deep in the soil below the frost line. This ensures a strong anchor for the structure, even if the ground freezes. For areas where concrete footings aren’t possible, we typically use heavy duty fasteners and custom-fabricated brackets to secure the structure in place.

How Tall and Wide is a Typical Metal Arbor?

Most arbors are 8 to 10 feet tall, 3 to 6 feet wide, and 2 to 3 feet deep. The exact dimensions will depend on the desired location for the arbor, as well as its function within your outdoor space. For example, if your style is more modern, you might choose a wider arbor to highlight open and spacious movement through the space. If your arbor leads to a romantic seating nook, you might choose a tall and narrow structure to create a more cozy and romantic vibe.

Can I Grow Plants on a Metal Arbor?

Yes! A metal arbor is great for supporting climbing plants because it’s so sturdy. When choosing plants for your arbor, consider their sun and water needs, as well as how dense the foliage on a mature plant will be. Some popular choices include:

  • Wisteria, with gorgeous and fragrant purple flowers that bloom in spring.
  • Hops aren’t just for your IPA! The hop plant is a dense and vigorous climber, which can create lots of shade and privacy.
  • Grapevines are a classic choice; large leaves and heavy vines lend a rustic touch. Plus, well: grapes!
  • Climbing roses will produce beautiful blooms and scents; roses tend to need more pruning and care to remain healthy than other plants.
