Types of Stone Work

Although all stone walls can look the same to the untrained eye, there are actually two main kinds of stone work: rubble masonry and ashlar masonry.

Rubble Masonry

Rubble masonry features unworked or minimally-worked stone in all its natural beauty. If you’ve ever seen low stone walls on historic properties around New England, those have likely been rubble masonry. Rubble masonry is an excellent choice for historic properties or for projects where the raw materials are the star. It has a rustic, organic appearance that people love.

Ashlar Masonry

Ashlar masonry requires working stones to achieve regular shapes before fitting them into a structure. Ashlar masonry is perfect for facades, arches, or walls where precision is required or a more uniform look is preferred. Ashlar masonry can be cut into various shapes and sizes, creating patterns such as mosaic, square, rectangular, strip, ledgestone, and more. These patterns can also be further customized by giving the stones a rock-faced (or quarry-faced) finish — where the edges of each stone are hand chiseled for a more distinctive look.

Stone Work Materials

Garon Fence sources high-quality raw materials, including granite, fieldstone, bluestone, limestone, sandstone, marble, and slate.

Granite

Granite isn’t just for countertops; it’s an extremely hard and durable stone that’s resistant to scratching, heat, and staining, making it perfect for exterior cladding (or sheathing). It features a wide range of natural color variation.  Granite is one of the most popular choices for stone columns and stone walls.

Fieldstone

Fieldstone is another very popular stone used for columns and walls. It is a mixture of granite and quartz, and is naturally found throughout the Northeast. For those looking for a stone that’s native to their environment, this is the stone of choice.

Bluestone

Due to its durability and relatively slip-resistance texture, bluestone is a very popular choice for caps on top of columns, or as walkways and patios.

Limestone

A softer stone than granite, limestone is often used for carvings and sculptures. It’s also a popular choice for flooring, paving, and cladding. Limestone is available in a variety of colors, including cream, beige, and gray.

Sandstone

A sedimentary rock composed of sand grains, sandstone is a popular choice for building exteriors, walls, and paving. It’s easy to work with, and comes in a variety of colors, including red, brown, and yellow.

Marble

Highly prized for its beauty, elegance, and natural veining, marble is well suited for sculptures and decorative stonework. It’s relatively susceptible to scratching and etching, though, which means it’s less suited for high-traffic areas on your property. It comes in a wide variety of colors, including white, cream, and black.

Slate

Slate is an excellent choice for outdoor projects because it’s a strong and durable stone that’s resistant to weathering. Slate tends to be a darker color, which makes it a beautiful choice for adding contrast to projects or creating visually impactful outdoor features.
